A Brief Analysis of the Trends in Chinese School Uniforms

2021-01-14

Chinese school uniforms have undergone a century of changes, evolving and reforming generation after generation, and now present a diverse and inclusive range of styles.
From the late 19th century to the early 21st century, the commonly known school uniforms were mainly sportswear, predominantly blue, black, and red, with a small portion of white or yellow.

Later, due to the diversification of culture and clothing styles, British-style and Korean-style uniforms were adopted by many schools. These more aesthetically pleasing uniforms, popular with students, generally consist of a blazer, trousers or skirt, long-sleeved shirt, and a knitted vest.

In recent years, with the revival of Chinese culture, Chinese elements have begun to be integrated into Western-style school uniforms, resulting in a trend of combining Eastern and Western styles. This blend of following current trends while embracing diversity is a highlight of modern school uniforms.

Currently, with the development of the Hanfu movement, Han Chinese people are reviving their traditional clothing – Hanfu. This has led to numerous designs incorporating Han-style elements into school uniforms. These Hanfu-inspired uniforms make modifications to the traditional Hanfu style, such as shortening the pleated skirts and narrowing the sleeves. The modified Hanfu, as a school uniform, not only showcases a strong Chinese character but also reduces student resistance to wearing uniforms and promotes the inheritance and continuation of traditional culture.

Therefore, it is evident that the future trends in Chinese school uniforms will inevitably incorporate more unique Chinese elements and traditional clothing elements.
