The role of color in clothing

2020-11-10

In aesthetics, red, orange, and yellow are considered warm colors, while blue and green are considered cool colors. In medicine, the perceived warmth or coolness of a color is the opposite of the actual temperature. Warm weather makes people feel tired, while cold weather invigorates; warm colors excite, while cool colors have an inhibitory effect.
Warm color palettes make people appear taller.
Color plays a significant role in clothing. If your figure isn't ideal, color can compensate. To appear taller or fuller, choose warm and bright colors for your suit, such as red or yellow. These colors seem to expand, creating an illusion of increased volume; therefore, they are called expanding colors.

Cool color palettes make people appear slimmer.
Cool-colored clothing can make you look shorter and thinner. Deep greens, purples, and dark blues, unlike warm colors, have a shrinking effect, hence the term 'contracting colors'. If you have larger hips and a less full bust, avoid light-colored pants or skirts with a dark top, as this will exaggerate the disproportion. A dark blue skirt paired with a light pink top will shrink the hips and expand the bust, creating a more flattering and fuller figure.

Clothing Considerations for Different Body Types
Short people should avoid pairing bright shoes and hats, as this will make them appear shorter. A gray outfit with a bright hat, however, can create the illusion of height. Thin people can appear fuller in brightly colored suits, especially those with checkered or horizontal stripes, which create a more robust and balanced look. Overweight individuals should avoid overly bright suits, especially in winter. In winter, avoid light-colored coats and jackets; in summer, avoid light gray or white pants, as these will make you appear larger and boxier. Tall people should avoid brightly colored and highly saturated clothing, as this will make them appear even larger and may cause feelings of unease in others. Darker, solid, or muted colors will create a more composed, calm, and approachable appearance.
